Holiday Travel and Oral Health Tips for Wilmington, NC Families

Jul 4, 2026 | Preventive Dentistry

The holiday season is one of the busiest times of year for families in Wilmington, NC. Between visiting relatives, driving across the state, flying out of Wilmington International Airport, attending holiday parties, and enjoying seasonal treats, normal routines can quickly fall apart. Unfortunately, oral health routines are often one of the first things people forget when travel gets hectic.

Whether you are leaving Wilmington for a long road trip, heading to the airport before sunrise, visiting family in another city, or hosting guests here along the coast, it is important to keep your smile healthy along the way. A little planning before you travel can help prevent toothaches, bad breath, stained teeth, gum irritation, and unexpected dental problems during a time when most people would rather be relaxing.

At Salling & Tate Family Dentistry in Wilmington, NC, we know how easy it is for brushing, flossing, and regular dental habits to slip during the holidays. The good news is that protecting your teeth while traveling does not have to be complicated. With the right travel kit, smart snack choices, and a few simple habits, you can keep your smile fresh and healthy wherever the season takes you.

Why Holiday Travel Can Be Hard on Your Teeth

Holiday travel often changes everything about your daily schedule. You may be waking up earlier, staying up later, eating more sweets, drinking more coffee, or skipping your normal routine because you are staying in a hotel or someone else’s home. For many Wilmington families, holiday travel may also include long hours in the car, airport snacks, fast food stops, and limited access to healthy meals.

These small changes can add up. More sugar, less water, and inconsistent brushing can create the perfect environment for plaque buildup. Coffee, tea, red wine, and dark sodas can also leave stains on your teeth, especially when consumed more often than usual. If you already have sensitive teeth, gum issues, dental restorations, Invisalign trays, retainers, or mouthguards, travel can make it even easier to misplace or neglect the items you need.

The goal is not to avoid every holiday treat. Instead, the goal is to enjoy the season while staying mindful of your oral health.

Pack a Dental Travel Kit Before You Leave Wilmington

Before you head out of town, take a few minutes to pack a small dental travel kit. This is one of the easiest ways to stay consistent, especially if you will be on the road for several hours or away from home for multiple days.

Your travel kit should include:

  • Toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste, floss, and travel-size mouthwash
  • Retainer case, Invisalign case, nightguard case, or denture supplies if needed
  • Sugar-free gum, lip balm, and a small bottle of water for dry mouth
  • Any dental appliance instructions or contact information for your Wilmington dentist

Keeping these items in your carry-on bag, purse, backpack, or glove compartment can make a big difference. If your toothbrush is buried in a suitcase, you are much less likely to use it during a long travel day. Having everything close by makes it easier to brush after meals, floss before bed, or freshen up before a holiday gathering.

Stick to Your Brushing and Flossing Routine

When your schedule changes, your oral health routine should stay as familiar as possible. Aim to brush at least twice a day and floss once a day, even if you are traveling. Brushing before bed is especially important because it removes food particles, sugar, and plaque before they sit on your teeth overnight.

If you are staying with family or friends, it can be tempting to skip brushing because everyone is busy or sharing bathroom space. Try to make your dental routine part of your normal morning and nighttime habits, just as you would at home in Wilmington.

For children, holiday travel can be especially disruptive. Parents may need to remind kids to brush and floss, especially after desserts, hot chocolate, candy, or holiday snacks. If your child is excited, tired, or out of their usual bedtime routine, brushing can easily be forgotten. A small travel toothbrush and kid-friendly toothpaste can help make the routine easier.

Drink Plenty of Water, Especially During Long Trips

Hydration plays an important role in oral health. Water helps rinse away food particles, supports saliva production, and helps reduce dry mouth. Saliva is one of your mouth’s natural defenses because it helps neutralize acids and wash away bacteria.

During travel, many people drink less water than usual. Long drives, flights, salty snacks, coffee, and alcohol can all contribute to dry mouth. If you are traveling from Wilmington by car, keep water nearby so you can sip throughout the trip. If you are flying, bring an empty water bottle to fill after security or purchase water before boarding.

Water is also a better choice than sipping soda, sports drinks, sweet tea, or juice throughout the day. Sugary and acidic drinks can expose your teeth to repeated acid attacks, especially when you sip them slowly over several hours.

Be Smart with Holiday Sweets and Snacks

Holiday treats are part of the season, and you do not have to avoid them completely. However, how often you snack matters. Constant grazing on cookies, candy, caramel, dried fruit, or sugary snacks can keep sugar on your teeth for longer periods of time. Sticky sweets are especially problematic because they can cling to teeth and dental work.

If possible, enjoy sweets with meals instead of snacking on them all day. Your mouth produces more saliva during meals, which helps rinse away food and sugar. After eating, drink water to help clear your mouth until you are able to brush.

Teeth-friendly travel snacks can include cheese, nuts, plain yogurt, crunchy vegetables, and fresh fruit. These options are easier on your teeth than sticky candy or sugary packaged snacks. For long road trips from Wilmington, packing healthier snacks ahead of time can help you avoid relying only on gas stations or fast food options.

Protect Your Teeth from Stains During the Holidays

Many favorite holiday drinks can stain teeth over time. Coffee, tea, red wine, dark sodas, cranberry drinks, and deeply colored sauces can all contribute to discoloration. This does not mean you have to avoid them entirely, but it helps to be mindful.

One simple tip is to drink water after stain-causing foods or drinks. You can also avoid slowly sipping dark beverages for hours. The longer these liquids sit on your teeth, the more opportunity they have to leave stains.

If you have recently had teeth whitening or are planning to whiten your teeth before holiday photos or events, ask Salling & Tate Family Dentistry about the best timing and aftercare. Professional guidance can help you get better results and avoid sensitivity.

Do Not Forget Retainers, Invisalign, Mouthguards, or Dental Appliances

If you use Invisalign trays, a retainer, a nightguard, or another dental appliance, make sure it is part of your packing checklist. These items are easy to forget, especially when packing at the last minute.

Always bring the proper case. Wrapping a retainer or aligner in a napkin can lead to it being accidentally thrown away. Leaving a nightguard loose in a suitcase can also expose it to bacteria or damage. If you are traveling with children or teens who wear retainers, double-check that they have their case before leaving Wilmington.

For Invisalign patients, travel can interrupt normal wear time. Try to stay consistent with your aligner schedule, remove trays when eating or drinking anything other than water, and brush before putting them back in. If you are unsure what to do before an extended trip, contact Salling & Tate Family Dentistry before you leave.

Schedule a Dental Checkup Before Major Holiday Travel

If you have been putting off dental care, the weeks before holiday travel are a good time to schedule a visit. A routine cleaning and exam can help catch small issues before they become painful or inconvenient. This is especially important if you have noticed tooth sensitivity, gum tenderness, jaw pain, a cracked tooth, or discomfort when chewing.

No one wants to deal with a dental emergency while traveling or during a holiday weekend. Seeing your Wilmington dentist before you leave can give you peace of mind and help you enjoy your plans without worrying about untreated dental problems.

This is also a good time to ask about whitening, mouthguards, Invisalign, or treatment you have been considering before the new year. Many patients use the holiday season as a reminder to finish the year with a healthier smile.

Know What to Do in a Dental Emergency

Even with good planning, dental emergencies can happen. A tooth can crack while eating, a crown can come loose, a child can injure a tooth, or sudden tooth pain can develop during travel. If something happens, stay calm and contact your dental office for guidance.

Common dental travel emergencies may include:

  • Toothache, swelling, broken tooth, lost filling, or loose crown
  • Injured tooth from a fall, sports activity, or accident
  • Broken retainer, damaged nightguard, or lost Invisalign tray

If you are in Wilmington or returning soon, contact Salling & Tate Family Dentistry to discuss the next best step. If you are out of town and the issue is urgent, seek local dental care and follow up with your regular dentist when you return.

Our Patients love us!

An Exceptional Practice

From the front desk to the checkout, the staff in this office is extremely friendly. I first met with Tara, She made this dental coward very comfortable and explained everything that she was doing from X-rays to the preliminary exam prior to my actual meeting with Dr. Jamie Salling. He took his time with me and explained in detail the work that needs to be done and how we need to proceed. This is an exceptional practice!

Nicest Group of Professionals

I lost a front tooth (crown) on vacation. They were kind, empathetic, professional, and efficient. There are not enough adjectives to describe the whole office, from check-in to check-out. Dr. Jameson and her assistant Katelin were the absolute best and wanted me to be comfortable finishing out my vacation. This office needs to offer training on how all dental offices should run!

Wonderfully Friendly Staff

You are greeted with a wonderful staff. Not fake acting, but actually nice, friendly staff. Dr. Tate is always very helpful and listens to what’s going on. He helps guide you to the right decisions. If there was a sixth star I’d give that!

Excellent Experience

I’m new to the area and received a referral from a new neighbor. I was planning on setting up a routine visit when I lost a filling and had to expedite an appointment. The office got me in quickly, and I am completely pleased with my experience with Dr. Jameson. I then followed up with a routine cleaning appointment, and Heidi was excellent. I have found my dentist!

My Favorite Dental Office!

Your entire experience will be great. From first being greeted by the incredibly kind front office staff to talking with the gentle and thorough hygienists about your concerns/questions, you will feel at ease. I feel the dentists take a more conservative approach, which I appreciate (because of my anxiety at the dentist). I’ve seen many dentists around the country, and this is my favorite office.

Careful and Caring

New to Wilmington, and was very nervous for my first dental appointment. However, Heidi is a great hygienist, careful and caring. And Dr. Tate! Well, you had me at the architecture of the mouth and the golden ratio. I’m in.

5 STARS!

Dr. Jameson was great! She truly made it easy and painless! She walked me through the process of her findings and next steps to take. She was very clear and made it very easy for me to understand! She even reached out to me a few hours after my appointment to make sure I was doing okay! 5 STARS!

Highly Recommend!

Dr. Jamie Salling and his staff are absolutely wonderful! The work that is performed stands the test of time. If you are considering switching dentists, or you are looking for a new one, I highly recommend his office. There’s a big difference between a dentist and a GREAT dentist, that’s why I choose Salling & Tate!

Kind and Thorough

I had a wonderful experience at my appointment. The hygienist and dentist were both kind, thorough, and provided the exact amount of care I wanted. They did not push extra services on me but were knowledgeable and wanted to establish an effective care plan. They came highly recommended by a friend, and I now see what the hype is about. Wonderful dentistry.

Took Care of My 8-Year-Old

We are from out of town. My eight-year-old daughter broke her two front teeth while we were here visiting. Dr. Jamie saw us the very next day. He did such a good job and Managed all of our anxiety so well, that spending the afternoon at his office was actually better than the afternoon on the beach we had been planning! Highly recommend.

Best Dental Atmosphere!

Friendly and professional atmosphere. I didn’t have to wait long to be seen, and the location is convenient with adequate parking and easy to find. Best dental atmosphere I have had since I moved to Wilmington!

I Won't Go Anywhere Else!

I’ve been with Salling & Tate for a few years now, and they take such great care of their patients! They’re friendly, thorough, and they go above and beyond. I wouldn’t want to go anywhere else for my dental needs. I’ve worked with Dr. Tate in the past and now Dr. Jameson, and I felt in great hands with both!
